We’ve had beautiful weather in Kentucky the last couple of weeks. Fall is here and we’ve been getting a kick start on winter projects on the farm. The high tunnels are mostly cleared from summer crops, cover crops have been sown in the vegetable growing plots, and we’ve started the big project of building out a combo vegetable wash station/ walk-in cooler and freezer area. It’s a big project we’ve been meaning to tackle for a few years now and we’ve framed out the new concrete pad, placed drains, and hopefully, before Thanksgiving, it’ll be finished! We need more space to store all these Thanksgiving turkeys!

I’m also going ahead and planning next years vegetable growing season, meat processing schedule, and some of the other not so fun business side of things. One idea that’s been coming back to me all summer is opening an on-farm store. It’d be just a small area open during the week where those local can stop in and get vegetable, eggs, and meat. I tried this maybe three years ago but we were spread so thin with farmers’ markets I didn't follow through to the next year. We occasionally still have folks drop by, but if you’re local and would be interested in supporting something like this, send me a message with any other local products you’d like to see.
We’ve really seen an uptick in those wanting to source local meat with the concerns being brought to light in the media this year - imported beef, lab grown meat, food recalls, etc. It’s great to see people becoming more aware of just how corrupt our food system has become and seeking out local food; all us farmers appreciate you all supporting what we do. With all that said, we have been running out of popular items quickly! We get animals processed every month, so if you’re looking for something and we’re out of it, we’ll be restocked soon, so reach out and we’ll be happy to hold certain items for you.
A last, quick note - Thanksgiving turkeys are going quick! If you’re thinking of reserving a bird for the holiday I wouldn’t wait. Find more info on our Thanksgiving turkeys HERE.
Take care & enjoy the fall weather 🍂
